, a jazz educator from Florida who is no relation to the guitarist of the same name, covers a lot of group within the modern mainstream on this CD which features him heading small groups ranging from a trio to a sextet. His eight originals range from the intense "Hebron" and what sounds like an Art Blakey
tribute ("Artwork") to some chord changes worthy of John Coltrane
("Lady Bug") and the cooking "Hat Trick." The high-powered tenor's creative exploration of Billy Strayhorn's
"Chelsea Bridge" by itself shows that he is overqualified to be just an obscure teacher. Hopefully the release of his debut will result in this Jack Wilkins
gaining much higher visibility.
