Album Review

Contempo Records originally released this Rice & Beans Orchestra album produced in Puerto Rico by Pepe Luis Soto and Tato Rossi in 1978. Their sound is a cross between Van McCoy's "Hustle" and MFSB's Philly orchestrations. "Disco Dancing" is quite similar to MFSB's "TSOP," and "Symphonic Salsa" sounds like MFSB's rendition of Elton John's "Philadelphia Freedom." The "Rice & Beans Theme" follows the LP's pattern: plenty of flutes and strings. The whole would've fared better had more imagination been applied regarding the basslines -- they seem to have been afterthoughts.
