Pearl Jam asked four trusted friends from the wider showbiz world to conduct long sit-down interviews, including Australia's former world champion surfer Mark Richards, a surfing buddy of frontman Eddie Vedder whom the singer trusted enough to write the set-list for a gig in 2006.
"The brief was they were looking for interesting questions, questions that would challenge them," Richards told Fairfax Media.
‘‘Their publicist said they haven’t been asked a good question in 17 years.’’
And the result? Even the most seasoned journalist would admit the surfer got some good material: like Vedder's eccentric habit of leaving sheets of paper with evolving lyrics in old typewriters laying around his house to revisit later: "I [even] used to bring typewriters on the plane... I'm not a computer-writer… there's no romance in it."
Here are some video highlights from Pearl Jam talking exclusively to Australian surfer Mark Richards ahead of the release of their latest album Lightning Bolt, due October 15th.
