London's Chinatown, then and now
Gerrard Street is the heart of London's Chinatown. And in a small, cramped basement rehearsal space below either #22 or #39, the four future members of Led Zeppelin jammed together for the very first time on an August afternoon in 1968.
The session was organized by 24 year old Jimmy Page when the band he was in, The Yardbirds, suddenly broke up in July. He'd been left holding a bagful of unfulfilled concert commitments, including a fast approaching tour of Scandinavia.
So Page quickly began recruiting new musicians, like a guy with whom he'd done a lot of session work around London, John Paul Jones, and a couple of guys who'd been in a group up north called Band Of Joy: Robert Plant and John Bonham.
