Aaaand…. We have a launch date!
The PlayStation press conference today at GamesCom in Cologne, Germany wasn’t totally mind blowing, but it did feature content that elaborated on what we had witnessed at E3 2013.
The conference started a little awkwardly (looks like they had a few technical difficulties) but it was worth the wait to see Shuhei Yoshida sitting on a lone chair on stage, walking us through the global unveil of the PS4 user interface. The quick glimpse that we were given highlighted the home screen, watching a game in progress and in-game share to twitter.
Then came the list of content still to be released for PlayStation 3. First came new details for Gran Turismo 6. Through a video we learned about concept cars design by leading auto manufacturers such as Honda, BMW, Aston Martin, Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, Inifiniti, Audi, and more. Along with a released date of December 6th, 2013, Gran Turismo is also getting made into a major motion picture.
Sony listed of a bunch of PS3 titles that are in stores or coming later this year such as:
- Last of Us
- Beyond Two Souls
- Little Big Planet Hub
- Grand Theft Auto 5
For those folks thinking about picking up Grand Theft Auto 5 from the PlayStation Store, Sony is offering 75% off any other Rockstar game, which is a very good deal (I highly recommend picking up Read Dead Redemption). If you still don’t have a PS3, you can get a 12GB model now for $199.
PSVita is getting a price cut down to $199 starting tomorrow and the price of memory cards is getting reduced as well. A good thing for those looking to buy a Vita since cross play and remote play between the PS4 and Vita through wifi was heavily pushed during the conference. Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag was demonstrated showing how you could seamlessly go from playing on your tv with a dual shock 4 controller to on your PSVita.
Games coming to PSVita include:
- Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate
- Lego Marvel
- Football Manager Classic 2014
- Borderlands 2
- Killzone Mercenary
- Murasaki Baby
- Big Fest
Sony spent a little bit of time talking about services that will be offered on the PS4 beyond gaming. Twitch, the live streaming system for game play, and Sony Music Unlimited will be available on launch. Sony Music Unlimited will allow you to listen to music in the background during a game and a small UI for the music player will be accessible through hitting the PS button on the Dual Shock 4.
On to PS4! Watch_Dogs is getting 60 minutes of additional game play for PlayStation owners, exclusive content and a special level. Sony and Ubisoft are also in the process of making a Watch_Dogs movie. Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag has some exclusive Aveline de Grandpré content for PlayStation owners. A new next gen MMO called War Thunder is also coming to PS4, which was developed by the creators of Minecraft.
And now for the juicy bit of news that you were waiting for. PlayStation 4 is being released in North America on November 15th, 2013 at $399. Sony announced that to date, over one million pre-orders of PS4 have been made worldwide. If you are debating which console to buy Watch_Dogs or Call of Duty: Ghosts for, never fear. Sony is offering a significant discount for certain games if you purchase them on PS3 and then want to upgrade to PS4 through digital downloads.
Well that’s it folks! Now the countdown begins until November 15th. I’m excited. Are you?
