With Any Kind Of Lie, Marti Jones strives for autonomy; keeping the covers to a minimum (only Clive Gregson's "Second Choice" and Loudon Wainwright's "Old Friend" make the cut), she and Don Dixon write the nine remaining songs themselves. The results are mixed: while none of the couple's originals are weak, Jones' greatest strength as a performer is as an interpreter of other people's work -- Any Kind Of Lie is an impressive accomplishment, but it lacks the eclectic fun of her best efforts.
