Wheatstraw remains a shadowy figure, one of the better selling blues artists from the late 1930s and early '40s who failed to make a lasting impression on modern audiences. Being a piano player instead of a guitarist is one reason for not crossing over. Overall, however, the sameness of his work is detrimental as well, which is a shame because Wheatstraw's style is a wholly engaging one, full of signature vocal trademarks and a solid -- if unremarkable -- piano style. Highlights in this set include "I Want Some Seafood," "Don't Feel Welcome Blues," "Meat Cutter Blues," and "What More Can a Man DoNULL." Although not a household name, fans of barrelhouse piano and broad-chested vocals will love this one. Read More
