They just can't let it go.  French media commentators were on Saku Koivu like flies on stink this week when Koivu decided to skip the Canadiens annual golf tournament in Laval and remain in Finland to spend time with his family and train for the upcoming season.  The ostensible foundation for the criticism is that as the Canadiens captain, Koivu has a responsibilty to show up at team functions, and that his failure to attend is symptomatic of Koivu's lack of understanding of or respect for the captaincy.  That, of course, is a load of crap on a scale with the contents of Andre the Giant's bedpan.  The relentless criticism of Koivu has nothing to do with leadership and everything to do with language.  Nationalist elements in the local media have had it in for Koivu for years over his lack of fluency in French, and they stir that pot at any and every opportunity, as if linguistic proficiency has anything to do with the business at hand, which is winning hockey games.  If Saku Koivu ever owed the community anything, he's repaid it in spades with a 13 season-and-counting committment to the city and the team, and tireless charity work - both publicized and unpublicized - in the wake of an inspirational and successful battle against cancer.  It takes small minds to nitpick at such a man, and even smaller minds to pretend the criticism is motivated by something other than what it's really all about.
