Eight-year-old Rhoda Penmark has always been the perfect daughter, but when a schoolmate mysteriously drowns at a school picnic, her mother grows increasingly suspicious about Rhoda’s involvement. Exposing mid-century fears about parenthood during the baby boom, the film offers a critique of a seemingly utopian 1950s America, asking existential questions about the banality of evil and its origins.
